Creativity helps you see things differently and better deal with uncertainty. A good (but not so good event) example is our current COVID-19 situation. Being quarantined has caused many of us to become more stressed than usual (there are lots of hats to wear especially when you have children), bored, frustrated and goodness knows what those other feelings are. So to adapt, you have had to become more creative, and find ways and keep your mind engaged and staying positive.
Studies show that creative people are better able to live with uncertainty. This is because they can adapt their thinking to allow for the unknown. As a parent it is essential to nurture your kids to keep their creativity, for they have a lot to face in life and you want to equip them with the tools necessary to overcome the challenges they might face.
With that said, here are the main reasons why allowing your children to express their creativity is important:
Gives them independence and Control:
I am sure you have heard the statement “conformity kills creativity”. It is so important to allow your kids to self-express in any way. For example through drawing, dancing, singing, building legos, doing board games or any other form of art.
Increases their confidence:
By acknowledging your kid’s achievements, you will increase their confidence and celebrate their uniqueness and diversity.
Fosters mental growth:
Expressing creativity causes your kids to think differently, or think of new ways to do something or solve something. This action creates new additional neuron pathways in the brain (like highways of the brain) which help in problem-solving. This is called divergent thinking which is the backbone of creativity.
Nurtures children’s emotional health:
Yes, allowing your children to be more creative helps them express and better cope with their feelings! Experimenting and making mistakes is all part of the learning (you know that feeling when you lose a game…!)
Oh, this is all so important. As a psychologist once told me, if learning is entwined with fun then a person will retain more of what they are learning.
I hope you get to find, and indulge yourselves into some creative things with your family especially during these strange times. We are stuck at home but let’s not put our minds on pause (or screen-pnosis), lets use this time to enhance our creative minds!!
